Winter showed up and the car did that thing where it clicks once and then judges you. We have been those idiots. More than once. The cables were in the garage. The washer fluid was still the summer stuff. The block heater cord was a household extension that had no business being outside...
Winter showed up and the car did that thing where it clicks once and then judges you. We have been those idiots. More than once. The cables were in the garage. The washer fluid was still the summer stuff. The block heater cord was a household extension that had no business being outside.
So we wrote it down before we forget again.
The Minnesota-grade winter car prep checklist is two pages. You print it, stand in the driveway, and check the boxes. "Minnesota-grade" means below zero and road salt. Same job in Wisconsin, the Dakotas, the prairies, and Alaska. If your winter is milder, the sheet tells you what to skip.
It covers the stuff we keep getting wrong:
Coolant and washer fluid that are actually rated for a hard freeze, not whatever is left in the jug
A battery that starts the car in October and then quits on the first morning that hurts
Tires, pressure, and rinsing the salt off before it moves in
A kit that lives in the car, not on a shelf you cannot reach when you are already stuck
It is $7. It is not a repair procedure, and it is not the law where you live. It is the list we wish we had taped to the garage door.
Get the checklist. Then go plug in the maintainer. We'll be out there too, learning the same lesson in a different driveway.
